  • Notes
    • Joseph apparently arrived in New Orleans, LA from the port of LeHavre, France on 28 Dec. 1847. It seems he was born probably in Saxony, Germany and that the name was probably originally spelled Feuerabind or Fuerabind). I see that he apparently moved to Vicksburg, MS where he was listed as Feroben in the 1850 Warren Co. Census. His son Henry James was born in Vicksburg on 9 Jan. 1858. He then married a Mrs. Sarah Kaiser on 29 Oct 1858, 10 months later. It would appear likely that Sarah was not his birth mother and that his birth mother had likely died possibly giving him birth or soon after. It is surprising that I cannot seem to find him in any census after that 1850 census using any variation that I can think of to the spelling of his name. In Dec. of 1862 he joined for one year enlistment as a Private with Capt. Wett's Co. of Mississippi Light Artillery. He continued to served and was reported present on various muster rolls all the way through April of 63. He obviously extended his enlistment for another three years. Then for some reason not recorded, he is shown with Schultz's Comoany of the 3rd (Palmetto) Battalion, SC Light Artillery and is reported by the Union Army as a Confederate deserter who took the oath of allegiance on Nov. 18, 1864 at Memphis. His residence was listed as Vicksburg. I am almost 100% certain it is the same Joseph. He was shown in the records variably as Faribob, Feroben, and Farbon, but all the same man. when he took the oath at Memphis they describe him as dark complexion, light hair, blue eyes, 5' 7" tall, and forty years of age. That would match him having been born abouyt 1825 + or -.
