  • Notes
    • Upchurch Bulletin, vol. 1, p. 74, 1980. XID-1109. Ca. 1794 - ?

B.L. West 1972, Upchurch Family of England, Virginia, and North
Carolina, pp. 30-34. Ten children of Moses Upchurch and Mary Simms
are given; they do not include Courtney. See, however, G.T. Little
      1984, Those Mississippi Upchurchs, p. 8.

Upchurch Bulletin 7, pp. 51-65, 1986. XID-1109. Courtney was born
circa 1794 in the Moccasin Creek Area of Franklin County, North
Carolina. In 1802 he moved with his parents to the eastern edge of
Chatham County. Presumably he took up farming for he paid taxes on
200 acres of land in 1815, the year after his marriage. Between 1834
and 1836 the family moved to Dallas County, Alabama. After
Courtney's death, his widow and family went to Perry County from
      Marengo County, Alabama.

Upchurch Bulletin, vol. 10, p. 95, 1989. The family is in Dallas
      County, Alabama, by about 1835.

Upchurch Bulletin, vol. 12, pp. 11-15, 1991. A reconstruction of the
family of Courtney Upchurch. This list suggests that there were
fourteen children. This reconstruction was prompted by a record of a
Courtney G. Upchurch, born October 1828, died December 1915 in
Crawford, McLennan County, Texas. (Is this record actually that of
James Courtney Upchurch? What happened to him?)

Richard Phillip Upchurch files 1995, Courtney Upchurch, XID-1109.
Item #1: From Mrs. Miles Lomar, 3rd great-granddaughter of Courtney.

He was born about 1794, a son of Moses Upchurch and Mary Sims, died
before 1850, married 21 April 1814 in Chatham County, North Carolina,
      to
Cynthia Richardson. Children Moses, Burnett, Calvin B., Sion,
      Delinea,
Cynthia, and James Courtney. Family moved to Dallas County, Alabama
      between 1834 and 1836.

Item #2: Potter 1974, 1820 North Carolina Census/Tax Lists. Coatney
Upchurch appears on page 30 of the census records.

Item #3: 1830 North Carolina census has Courtney in Pittsboro
      Division
of Chatham County. Courtney is not found in the 1840 North Carolina
      census.

Item #4: From Elna E. Burskhatter. Courtney Upchurch (1 white poll)
      in
the 1815 Personal Property and Land Taxes records in Chatham County,
North Carolina, is listed as owning 200 acres in Capt. Upchurch's
      District. The 1820 Chatham County census lists 1 male under age 10;
      1
male of age 26-45; 2 females under age 10; and 1 female of age 16-26.

Item #5: From Mrs. L.W. Priest. Cockney Upchurch given as bondsman
      3
January 1811 for the marriage of Whitney Upchurch (his brother) and
Elizabeth Goodwin. Wake County, North Carolina, Marriage Bonds.

Item #6: On a visit to Adelia Jane Upchurch, Richard Phillip
      Upchurch
inspected an old country store ledger (April 1827 to October 1829)
      which
contains entries for Moses and Nathan Upchurch and several of their
children. Entries for Courtney Upchurch are dates 7, 10, and 21
      April
1827; May, June, July, September and October 1827; January, February,
and April 1828. [Richard Phillip Upchurch, letter 5 August 1995:
      this
store was on the Wake/Chatham border and the association of Courtney
with several Upchurchs provides a strong family link.]

Item #7: Chatham County, North Carolina, census records. No
      Courtney
listed in 1810. For 1820, Courtney is head of household in family
      with
five members and one male slave (age 14-25) -- 1 male of age 26-44; 1
female age 16-25; 1 male and 2 females under age 10. For 1830, there
are 10 people in the household (no slaves) -- 1 male of age 40-50, 1
      female age 20-30, 2 males under age 5, 2 males between 5 and 10, a
      male
      age 10-15, 1 female under 5, and 2 females between 5 and 10.
      Courtney
      not listed for 1840.

Item #8: From Elizabeth Perkins. Courtney Upchurch born circa 1790,
died after 1836, married 21 April 1814. Cynthia Richardson born
      about
      1785, died after 1870.

Item #9: From Fay Byington. Courtney Upchurch gave a trust deed to
Reuben Sauls, as recorded in Book AB, p. 127, Chatham County, North
      Carolina.

Item #10: From Genevieve Ellen Tharp. Apparently the family lived
      in
Marengo County, Alabama, until Courtney died just before the 1840
      census
as this is where his probate records are found -- "Courtney Upchurch
late of Marengo Co, deceased." The family then moved to Perry
      County.
The first probate records occur in the November 1841 term, but they
suggest that the administrator Presley Woodal had been in court
      earlier.
The case was continued to the February 1842 term, then to the
      November
1842 term, and continued on to the April 1843 term. No record of the
case, however, appears in records of the latter date or later,
suggesting that the estate may never have been fully settled. His
estate was declared insolvent, the administrator being ordered to
      hold
$273.13 until creditors could file a claim.

Item #11: From Oliver Wingate. Notes an 1818 Chatham County (?),
      North
Carolina, reference to Coatney B. Upchurch.

Item #12: From Virginia Diann Kenney. Courtney Upchurch and Cynthia
Richardson married 29 April 1814 in Chatham County, North Carolina.

Item #13: a list of 14 children for Courtney.

Item #14: reference to my letter. Item #15: Belle Leuter West,
Upchurch Family, p. 333, list of 10 children for Moses Upchurch and
      Mary
Sims. Richard Phillip Upchurch writes that there are probably at
      least
three additional children -- a daughter shown on the 1800 Franklin
County, North Carolina, census, age 16-26; Courtney; and an
      additional
      male on the 1790 census.

1820 North Carolina census, Chatham County, p. 206: Coatney
      Upchurch,
with five members in the family. Two males of ages 0-10 and 26-45.
Three females of ages 0-10, 0-10, and 16-26.

1830 North Carolina census, Chatham County, p. 432. Courtney
      Upchurch,
with wife and eight children. Males in family of ages 0-5, 0-5, 5-
      10,
      5-10, 10-15, and 40-50. Females of ages 0-5, 10-15, 10-15, and 30-
      40.

Richard Phillip Upchurch, letter 17 September 1995. Courtney
Upchurch moved from Chatham County, North Carolina, to Dallas County,
      Alabama, about 1835.

Courtney was the only child of Moses Upchurch who did not remain in
North Carolina. Fifteen children of whom the names of seven are not
      known.
